In order to realign the Roman calendar with the sun, Julius Caesar had to add 90 extra days to the year 46 B.C. when he introduced his new calendar. He also changed New Year's Day to January 1st. Caesar wanted to honour Janus, the two-faced god who looks backwards into the old year and forward into the new. The Julian Calendar was introduced when Julius Caesar ordered the Roman Empire and their vassals to follow a 365 day, 12 month year based on a solar year. It would occur for three years and then change on the fourth year (what we know as a leap-year) to 366 days.
